Communication in dementia care
Most carers find communication in dementia care becomes more difficult as the condition worsens. Here are some resources to help you when caring for someone with dementia:
- Watch this podcast (approx 11 mins long) which features tips for better communication.
- Follow the free course on dementia from SCIE (Module 7 is on communication).
- Download the Dementia UK communication guide.
- Try the Three Golden Rules from the Contented Dementia Trust. You can also buy the book Contented Dementia by Oliver James from that site.
…and don’t give up. Communication really matters to the person you are caring for, and good communication will make life easier for both of you.

SMILE in Charlbury
We are starting a new care and well-being activity group in Charlbury on Friday 22 June at 10:30 for Carers and People with Memory Problems. Jointly organised with Blossom Arts, the first four sessions are supported by Age UK Oxfordshire and there is no charge to attend. Suitable for people with mild to moderate memory problems and their carers, the two hour sessions will include refreshments.
Each session will include welcome time, seated exercise to music followed by enjoyable activities such as music, poetry, dance, arts & crafts. There will also be support and information for carers.
We welcome volunteers to help with the sessions, and any offers to help keep the group going after September. If you are interested in participating please call us on 07533 248659.
